For anyone nostalgic for their grandmother’s kitchen or wanting to re-create the Sign of the Kiwi dates scones in their own home…. then look no further! These date scones will hopefully hit the spot.

Sweet, soft, and the perfect excuse to open that jar of golden syrup from the pantry (yes, you know the one, that one you bought last year that’s going hard and turning into paint).

Epic Date Scone Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 50g butter, cold and cubed/chopped small
  • ¾ cup chopped dates (The Sign of the Kiwi soak them for 30 minutes in boiling water before adding to soften them.)
  • ¾ cup standard milk (plus a bit more if it’s dry and flaky – you can use trim, but what’s the point!)

Baking Method

  1. Start soaking your dates 30 minutes before you begin to be like the authentic Sign of the Kiwi style.
  2. Heat oven to 200°C.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients first… so the flour, cinnamon, and brown sugar in a bowl.
  4. Rub in butter until it’s nice and crumbly.
  5. Stir through the chopped dates – or keep them whole to give it a really date-y feel!
  6. Add the milk and mix until it just comes together into a nice consistency.
  7. Flour the benchtop as per usual.
  8. Tip the mixture onto a floured surface and then shape into a round or big squares.
  9. Bake for around 15 minutes until golden and firm to touch.

Plating Up Your Date Scones

Brush with a bit of warm golden syrup for bonus points. I love to also serve them with more butter… and if you’re feeling cheeky, some whipped cream to keep your taste buds singing.
