This is a Kiwi’s Guide to the Great Global Scone-Off. An amalgamation of the Internet’s best loved recipes and a crowdsourced list that will make you go wild.

So. Here we go. If you’ve ever typed “best scone recipe” into Google, you’ll know you’re stepping into dangerous territory…. And before you start to read this – we promise you, we’re not one of those sites… Don’t you JUST HATE THOSE RECIPE SITES THAT GIVE YOU THIS STORY ABOUT HOW THEIR AUNT JUNE USED TO MAKE THEM THE BEST…. Yeah Yeah Yeah… Well. You’re in luck, this is not that page nor that website.

So here it is: The List of The Best of the Best Scones

#1

Edmonds Traditional Scones

The OG of Kiwi baking. If you didn’t grow up with this orange cookbook on your bench, did you even have a childhood?

The Edmonds recipe remains the ultimate yardstick – it’s at the top of Google, even ChatGPT thinks it’s pretty good. So maybe we should just keep it simple? (with added butter of course)

#2

Annabel Langbein’s Cheese Scones

Annabel’s cheesey scones (from Annabel’s friend Brona makes for her café in Wānaka) – they are sooooooo good and are perfect for a rainy day. Adding the rocket and herbs is just divine and they are perfect with a long black or some kind of caffeine infused morning (or afternoon) tea.

#3

Nadia Lim’s Pinwheel Scones

Nadia is all about lean wholesome fun. With these pinwheels, you’ll probably still feel like you’ve done something good for yourself even if you demolish three before the smoko. Yikes.

#4

Jamie Oliver’s Crumbly Scones

The Naked Chef’s version leans on the crumbliest recipe to keep you in check. Orange juice, fruit, are you mad? Maybe, but they are DAMN tasty.

These are perfect for when you want to impress the in-laws and want to keep your doctor happy with the 5-a-day.

#5

Mary Berry’s Cheese Scones

Britain’s matriarch of the barkery-arch brings the goods with sharp cheddar and a firm hand on technique.

We had a saying in our house, and if Mary says don’t overmix, you don’t overmix!!!! These are the kind of scones that could probably pass a Royal inspection year after year after year.

All of these recipes have earned their fame for good reason. 🙂

…..But if you’re after something with proper Kiwi personality, check out our local takes: cheese scones that actually taste like cheese, lemonade scones that don’t need a royal wedding to justify them, and date scones that’ll make you forget you ever judged a dried fruit.

Because here at Scone.nz, we’re not trying to start a food war, we’re just making sure New Zealand gets the recognition it deserves. Who’s with me!
